    Congrats OSCAR Pistorius!

I want to say a big CONGRATULATIONS to Oscar Pistorius, my fellow team Ossur athlete, and I must admit a hero of mine. On Friday May 16th, the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) in Lausanne, Switzerland, overruled the IAAF ban on amputee "blade runner," Oscar Pistorius. Here's a link to the press release (in english): http://www.tas-cas.org/d2wfiles/document/1086/5048/0/press%20release%20pistorius%20english.pdf I am so happy for you Oscar, it must be such a huge relief to take care of this business so you can concentrate on your passion, your gift and your sport. Run fast! Run Strong! We are cheering for you from all corners of the world.

    XAble interview

Here's an interview I did a couple weeks ago in Longboat Key, FL. We chatted right by the beach and caught up on so many different life moments from the Barcelona games, Ironman and the Amazing Race, there was a lot to talk about: http://www.xable.com/videos/100580 XAble is an interactive media network for the disabled community. Elio Navarro is the founder and the one who came down to interview me. There's a lot of cool info and videos featured on XAble. Lincoln TV ad - Thanks for watching!

Hello everyone!  So many of you have reached out and emailed, called or mentioned that you have seen me in the latest Lincoln MXZ commercial on TV.  Thanks so much :)  It is a very cool ad and I'm so proud to be part of it,  I think Carlos, Roger and the crew really captured my spirit and the features of the new MXZ beautifully.  You can find the 60 sec version of the commercial at Lincoln's website here:  http://www.lincoln.com/extras/tvads.asp?ad=3

If you want to see more - I've posted some snapshots from digital camera on this blog.  Plus there's a really cool behind the scenes documentary that's also on the Lincoln website.  It's a good summary about my life, told over the behind the scenes footage from the Lincoln commercial shoot in New York. Enjoy!  http://www.lincoln.com/extras/tvads.asp?ad=4

Incidentally some of the driving scenes were shot in New Jersey, Glen Ridge the small suburban town I lived in for a few months before starting grad school in California.  We shot just blocks from my old home, what a trip!  Then to do the rest of our driving shots in New York City was absolutely incredible.  Let's be honest, there's nothing like driving a Lincoln in Manhattan.

    Do extraordinary things, everyday! :)

Check out my new TV commercial for the new Lincoln MXZ car, here's a link to the Lincoln website if you'd like to check out the specs on the new car:  http://www.lincoln.com/mkz/home.asp   If you want to see the TV ad, I posted a copy of the video right here in this blog entry:

It was really fun to go back to NYC in early November, the very place where we shot the Lincoln ad, and of course a place I have called home for many years.  We shot the running shots in Central Park, and the driving shots were done both in the park, and through the streets of NYC.  What a thrill!  This November trip was in honor of Brooke's birthday and because he was running his first marathon.  Running a marathon is an extraordinary accomplishment and Brooke trained hard for the 26.2-mile challenge.   He crossed that finish line in 3:52 - well under his sub-4 hour goal time.  Open-mouthed  It was a great weekend to celebrate many extraordinary runners and people, I got to give out one of the 2007 RW Hero Awards at the "Runner's World" magazine Heroes party.   I gave the award to super-fast amputee runner Amy Winters (http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-243-293--12238-0,00.html)  Amy was honored along with Martin Franklin, Jamie and Lynn Parkes, Ryan Hall, Tegla Laroupe, and many onther inspiring people.   It was a great night before the big race, Brooke was inspired and ready for that start at the Verazzano bridge.

Brooke and I really took advantage of the time in New York and caught up with other friends and runners, like Tom Rock,  my "competitor" on CBS's Amazing Race 10.    He ran his 7th NYC marathon that weekend - thanks guys for the good carbo loading dinner and brunch.   Tom and Terry area also keeping a blog on this latest season of the Amazing Race.   Season 12 kicked off the same day as the NYC marathon, November 4th... it's been a pretty good season so far check out what TNT and some other past AR racers have to say about the current cast of characters at: http://alpha.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race12/blog.php

As we approach another Thanksgiving holiday, I am thankful that I have gotten to some AMAZING races throughout the years, and I'm looking ahead to some more great finishlines ahead.    It's been such a great 2007, and there's lots to be thankful for.  Wishing everyone out there a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Nike Womens 13-miler in San Fran, and other runs along the way

It's been a non-stop adventure lately.   In sports and in life.  I ran in the Nike Women's marathon and half-marathon in San Francisco.  It's the largest women's running event in the world, and it's also a fund raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, aka Team in Training.  I was honored to be amongst an incredible group of Nike athletes for this run.  I posted a few pix from the Nike Expotique stage, and the ATHLETE booth under the big tent.
You can see an interview I did that weekend with my friend Elise with Nike: http://insidenikerunning.nike.com/2007/10/25/finished-business-2/

I am also posting my playlist that I played on my iPod nano with running with my Nike + through San Francisco.  Perhaps you can help me stay inspired to run this winter with some new tunes or music suggestions?  i'm always looking for new stuff.  thanks and happy running!  Open-mouthed

    Keepin' it REAL

We went to the REALLY awards last night in Hollywood, CA.  It's the Reality TV awards show, that airs on the FOX Reality channel.  We had some fun laughs and smiles catching up with friends, and making new ones.  Our season's cast from Amazing Race 10, all walked down the red carpet together.  Mary and David Conley (team Kentucky) and James and Tyler ("the models" and 2006 winners) were all nominated for a REALLY award.  (Tune in on Fox Reality Oct. 13th to see who won!  I'm not telling...)

I actually tried to keep it real by wearing my ATHLETE t-shirt.  In my real life outside of the "Amazing Race", I am an athlete, and I believe strongly in giving back and providing sports opportunities to others.  The proceeds from these Nike t-shirts go to the LET ME PLAY fund, which helps support sports programs for disabled girls who want to play too.

To get your own ATHLETE shirt, and to show your support of the women athletes in your life visit NikeWomen.com

You'll get to see the latest Nike women's commercial, and you can order your own ATHLETE sports t-shirt in so many different colors, my favorite is of course the pink.  Wear yours and help support those sporty girls who keep it REAL ! Wink

    Running in Reykjavik, Iceland

I just posted the latest pix from my time in Reykjavik check them out in my photo album!!  I traveled there to run in the half-marathon (13.1 miles = 21 km), and to visit the worldwide headquarters of Ossur (the company that manufacturers the prosthetic feet, knees and liners that I wear).  It was an action packed trip - and of course the highlight was getting to run in the biggest race in Iceland.    The Glitnir Reykjavik Marathon offers a variety of races, a 3km, a 10km, a 21km and a 42km course.  I did the 21km race - and it was such a beautiful, and somewhat flat course.   I am particularly proud of my friends at Ossur who did their very first 10km running race.  I want to make a shout out to two fellow amputees, Dora Sigurjonsdottir and Kim de Roy - CONGRATULATIONS!!!  And even if she runs on two legs Wink We cannot forget our dear friend Edda who also conquered the 6.2 mile run for the first time.  She was so nervous... as we all are before our first race, but crossing that finish line is what makes it all worth it, way to go girl!!!  I am glad everyone had a a successful race, and we all had a lot of fun.  Hope we can all race together soon.

    p.s.

Here's a link to a TV interview I did before the race (the first half is in Icelandic, and all my soundbites are in English with Icelandic subtitles):

    The best workout...

One of my most favorite "workouts" is dancing.  Okay, it's not really part of my training, but I truly LOVE to dance.  This past weekend I was fortunate enough to hit the dance floor at club Deep in Hollywood, CA.  I don't stay out as late as I used to, but I managed to boogie until 2 am to some soulful house music with some good friends who also like to groove.  It's such a great stress reliever to leave it all behind.  There's nothing else like it, to move your body and your feet to the rhythms and beats, all under the flashing disco lights.  And with my athletic endurance, I have no problem dancing in the clubs for hours and hours, but the music is everything.  I can dance for hours IF the DJ is spinning a good set.  Living close to LA we get lots of good DJs, so I'm sure I'll be out in Hollywood dancing for another long "workout"  soon.

On my blog you can see a picture of me on the dancefloor at Holly's nightclub in Hollywood - that picture was taken for an article that appeared in the NY Times earlier this year.  The picture was taken at the "Monday Night Social" - and you can't really see me in the photo, just my legs (you can see my boyfriend in the green shirt, and BTW he's a great dancer).  That was such an LA evening, because we actually bumped into Heather Mills and some of the other "Dancing with the Stars" TV cast at a Hollywood restaurant we were dining at before going out dancing ourselves.   We of course said hello - and congratulated her on her performances, but let's be clear about something -- Heather Mills is not the only woman who can dance well on a prosthetic leg!  Wink

The Monday Night Social gets some good DJ talent - so if you're ever looking for some good music and vibes on a Monday night in LA you should check it out (see the link below)... and maybe I'll see you on the dancefloor Hot

"Music is the answer, to your problems, keep on moving and you can solve them.  If you feel that you can take no more, and your feet are heading for the door, gotta keep on dancing!"  - Danny Tenaglia

    JUST DO IT

I always get asked about how to get started in running... and I always reccomend the Runner's World website.  Runner's World magazine is a great publication, with lots of informative artcles about nutrition, race reviews and inspirational stories that keep you going.  On their website they host a whole secition on training, and its one of the greatest resources out there for running:

On the left side of the screen there are all these training plans for 5k, 10k, half-marathon, etc.  For all different levels of runners from beginners to experienced runners. This is what I used to train for my first road race - except back then you had to clip it out of the magazine, we didn't have the internet, and I held onto that 5k training plan from Runner's World magazine for years.  I would take the training chart and then copy in the miles I needed to run right onto my calender so it was scheduled in my day.  Check it out!

    Good luck and happy running!

    Bad @$$ at Badwater

Recently I had the honor of crewing for my good friend and long time mentor, David.  Here's an article that appeared about him and his Badwater endeavor in the NY Times:

There's a great video of David's crazy training regime also on the NY Times website, so check that out too....

Well the Badwater 135-mile ultra run began on Monday morning, July 23rd, and David gave it his best shot, but his body wouldn't cooperate with him, with kidney failure setting in early on, after 23.5 hours of running, he decided to do the smart thing by stopping at mile 73.  It was one of the greatest running performances I have seen - watching him tackle the heat, hills, and terrain of Death Valley, CA was truly inspiring.  The Badwater is one crazy, and grueling run, and I am so proud I got to see David take on the challenge.

    ESPYs

Last night I had the honor of going to another ESPY awards show.  Its always fun to celebrate another year of sport, and it's great to feel involved in the process.  You get to vote for your picks on ESPN.com, and then I'm lucky enough to watch the action live from the Kodak theatre and see who the fans have decided to honor.  I don't want to ruin too much of the surprise, although I'm sure you can find the results on the internet, but I won't say too much here just in case you want to watch this year's ESPY show on Sunday night on ESPN2.

I was fortunate to run into a few of my friends (and winners!) on the red carpet, so I've posted a few pix on my blog for all to see.  I would especially like to say a hello and good luck to Dean Karnazes, who is about to run in another Badwater race on July 23 in Death Valley, CA.  Badwater is a 135-mile run through the desert, you can visit this link to see just how crazy this run really is:  http://www.badwater.com/
Dean Karnazes has won the Badwater race, or as he says "I just survive the fastest"

Dean is one of the craziest, most passionate runners I know, and he inspires me to run further and stronger than I ever thought possible.  Congratulations Dean on winning this year's ESPY in the Outdoor Sports category!  For more background on Dean check out his website at:  http://www.ultramarathonman.com/flash/  Can't wait to see how you do at this year's Badwater run - stay cool

Nike + iPod nano = iRun

After 20 years of running you must find tricks and sometimes gadgets to get you super motivated again.   My favorite training tool these days, my Nike + running shoes.  The Nike + system works with the iPod nano, so you can track how fast you've run and how far you've run, while listening to music.  I am a big fan of running to music, and I've been collecting music for as long as I've been running - so the ability to blend two of my passions has unleashed a new zealous motivation in my training.

I have all these mixes on my nano, for 45 minute runs, 60 minute runs, 90 minute runs, etc.  I've even mixed and ordered the songs to match my local running routes, so that I hear that thumpin song just in time for that long 1.5 mile run up hill.  On days when my legs are tired, the music lifts my spirits and it keeps me running with a little more gusto, especially when you're out there training solo.

Check out my music list - and see what I'm running to lately.  This latest set is mostly house / dance music, I just love that steady club beat.

    What music gets you going?

    Running with Alberto

I got to run with Alberto Salazar this weekend.   Salazar is a champion runner - he won the NYC marathon (1980-82) and the Boston Marathon.  He is a legend in US distance running so it's pretty special to get to run with an athlete like Alberto.   And in fact, with a download available from Nike on iTunes - anyone can run with Alberto.   I downloaded the "Increase Your Speed" Nike+ workout, and it rocks!  It's an interval workout you can put on your iPod, the music is pumping a great set of tunes that is choreographed to the intervals.  Alberto is the one that coaches you through with the continues mix of music.  So although I didin't get to physically run with Alberto - virtually I did.  Where ever you are - and what ever streets you run, you can run with Alberto too.  Check out the Nike + work outs on iTunes.   http://www.nike.com/nikeplus/#workouts
    Keep running strong!
